Officials and meteorologists said the gray haze was then intensified by weather conditions: a calm high-pressure system, almost no wind, and an anticyclone that pushed smoke particles back down toward the surface instead of letting them disperse. So the city was not necessarily shrouded because a single massive strike got through, but because a large combined attack still caused multiple fires and smoke plumes despite heavy interception.
