Pentagon Breach Exposes Data of 2.76 Million Personnel in Unencrypted Files

2.76 million living U.S. military and civilian personnel had sensitive personal data exposed in a Pentagon database breach, along with records tied to 294,000 deceased individuals.
Unauthorized users accessed unencrypted files between October 2025 and July 2026, including Social Security numbers and military or civilian employment information.
July 16 marked the discovery of the file-sharing system vulnerability by the Defense Manpower Data Center, and affected individuals were notified on Sept. 18.
The Pentagon said it has no indication so far that the compromised information has been misused.
