Summary
Sept. 21 deaths of Aidan Hamilton, 18, and Robert Strang, 20, are being investigated after both were found near Smax Pseudo tablets labeled with pseudoindoxyl and MGM-15(DHM), according to court records.
Aug. 26 DEA action temporarily placed mitragynine pseudoindoxyl in Schedule I, and investigators believe the tablets' "pseudoindoxyl" label refers to that banned compound; lab and toxicology results are still pending.
Oxford-area sales are under scrutiny because Hamilton made multiple purchases at Puffs Vape, Tobacco and Beer Store, where two employees were arrested on possession-with-intent charges and given $100,000 bonds, though officials said they do not link those arrests to his death.
Strang's tablets were said to have been bought at a gas station about 30 minutes from Oxford, but the owner denied the pack found by Strang came from his store and said federal agents seized all kratom inventory Friday.
Former prosecutor Neama Rahmani said anyone in the supply chain could face civil or criminal liability if the product contained a Schedule I substance, though DOJ would still need to prove intent in any prosecution.
