Betr Offers $200 NHL Bonus on FOXNEWS Code as Rangers Face Red Wings

Q: Will a sudden injury force the Rangers to start a rookie goalie in tonight's Original Six showdown?

Yes. A late injury has changed New York’s goaltending plan and could force the Rangers to use rookie Dylan Garand in Friday night’s game at Detroit. Backup Joonas Korpisalo was placed on injured reserve Thursday with a lower-body injury and is considered week-to-week. The Rangers recalled Garand from AHL Hartford after he had just been sent down when he lost the No. 2 job out of camp. Because Igor Shesterkin started Thursday’s home opener against Tampa Bay, Garand is now the likely option on the second night of the back-to-back. Garand is not a complete unknown, but he would still qualify as an inexperienced NHL goalie in this spot. The 24-year-old made only three NHL starts late last season, though he performed very well, going 2-0-1 with a 1.62 goals-against average and a .948 save percentage. Multiple reports say he appears in line to start in Detroit, or at minimum dress as Shesterkin’s backup if New York changes course. That injury development is one reason Detroit entered the night favored. The Red Wings have the rest edge, home ice, and are expected to start veteran John Gibson. Even so, New York carries some confidence after its 5-1 win over Tampa Bay and has dominated this matchup recently, winning eight of the last nine meetings. So the answer is yes: Korpisalo’s sudden injury has opened the door for rookie Garand to start the Original Six matchup.
