Yankees Leave Aaron Judge Off 26-Man ALDS Roster as Calf Strain Lingers

Q: Could Tropicana Field's artificial turf secretly be the real reason Aaron Judge is missing the ALDS?

No. The main reason Aaron Judge is missing the ALDS is that his strained right calf has not healed enough, especially for the running demands of a game. The evidence is consistent across the Yankees’ public comments. Judge has been able to hit, take live batting practice and do workouts, but manager Aaron Boone said he had not yet run the bases, which was a key checkpoint. Judge’s injury is a moderate soleus strain, a calf injury that often lingers because the muscle is stressed with basic movement, not just sprinting. Medical commentary around the injury has also warned that returning too soon could worsen the strain or create added risk to the Achilles or hamstring. Tropicana Field’s artificial turf did matter, but as a secondary factor. Boone acknowledged the turf “plays into it a little bit,” and multiple reports said the Yankees were wary of exposing Judge’s calf to a harder surface, particularly in right field. That likely made the club even more cautious about activating him for Games 1 and 2 in St. Petersburg. But there is no strong basis to say the turf is the “real” hidden reason. If Judge had cleared the running and game-readiness tests, the Yankees almost certainly would have found a way to use his bat, even in a limited role. Instead, the team judged that he was not ready enough to justify a roster spot in a short series. The turf increased the risk calculation; it did not create the injury or become the primary cause of his absence.

Q: How will Gerrit Cole's risky post-surgery start impact New York's playoff survival without Aaron Judge?

New York’s playoff survival now leans heavily on Gerrit Cole giving them a true ace-level start, because without Aaron Judge the margin for error is much smaller. Cole’s start is “risky” mainly because he is coming off Tommy John surgery and has worked only 127 regular-season innings, but the Yankees are betting that his experience and track record outweigh that concern. He posted a 3.61 ERA in 22 starts this season, has a 2.93 ERA in postseason starts with New York, and has handled Tampa Bay well this year, allowing three runs or fewer in all three meetings. He also has the benefit of extra rest after not pitching in the Wild Card Series. The real issue is run support. Judge is off the ALDS roster with a calf strain, Giancarlo Stanton is active but limited, and the Yankees are facing Drew Rasmussen, who had a 2.67 ERA this season and has consistently dominated New York. That means Cole likely cannot just be good; he may need to be dominant deep into the game to prevent the series from tilting immediately toward Tampa Bay. If Cole gives the Yankees six or seven strong innings and hands over a lead or a tie, New York’s deeper pitching staff can keep the series alive while the offense tries to scrape together enough from Ben Rice, Cody Bellinger and the rest of the lineup. If he falters early, the Yankees could quickly find themselves chasing the series without their best hitter and with little offensive cushion.

Q: Will the Yankees' controversial decision to bench their captain backfire against Tampa Bay's dominant pitching?

Probably not as a decision, though Judge’s absence could still hurt them badly. The Yankees did not bench a healthy star; they left off a captain who still had not run the bases after a moderate soleus strain in his right calf. That matters in a short series, especially on Tropicana Field’s artificial turf, where the risk of aggravation is higher for a player of Judge’s size. If New York had activated him too soon and lost him for a later round, that would have carried its own cost. The baseball risk is obvious. Tampa Bay opens with Drew Rasmussen, who has been dominant all season and especially tough on the Yankees, posting a career 1.81 ERA against them. Judge’s power and plate discipline are exactly the kind of traits that can change a low-scoring series against elite pitching. New York also faces a deeper roster puzzle because Giancarlo Stanton is active but still working back from a long layoff, limiting the Yankees’ margin for error offensively. Still, the move is easier to defend because the Yankees have already shown they can score without Judge, sweeping Boston while outscoring the Red Sox 18-2. Their own pitching gives them a path as well, with Gerrit Cole starting Game 1 and a strong rotation behind him. So the Yankees may miss Judge against Tampa Bay’s pitching, and that absence could be decisive. But if the question is whether the roster call itself was reckless, the evidence says no: it was a cautious medical decision, not a panic move.
