Pete Hegseth Handles Air Force-Navy Coin Toss, Hits 9 of 10 3-Pointers

Q: What critical defensive adjustments allowed Air Force to stifle Navy's late comeback and secure their crucial 14-9 win?

Air Force secured the 14-9 win by tightening its front against Navy’s option game, adjusting cleanly to both Midshipmen quarterbacks, and winning key third-down situations late. After Navy’s 68-yard touchdown pass cut the margin to five, the Falcons’ defense settled in by clogging first and second down with a reinforced defensive line, which freed linebackers Blake Fletcher and Dallas to clean up runs and keep Navy behind schedule. Coach Troy Calhoun specifically pointed to the defense’s adjustments to whichever quarterback Navy used as a major factor, and the result was that Navy’s normally productive ground attack was held to 110 rushing yards. The late-game sequence was decisive. Air Force forced a fumble after Navy had moved into plus territory late in the third quarter, then repeatedly shut down the Midshipmen on third down. Navy finished just 1-for-11 on third downs in some reports and 1-for-12 in local coverage, underscoring how consistently the Falcons got off the field. In the fourth quarter, Air Force increased pressure rather than sitting back. Safety Max Mustell delivered a critical 10-yard sack of Jackson Gutierrez with 2:58 left, added a third-down pass breakup, and helped kill Navy’s final real chance. Combined with steady interior push from a rotating but effective defensive front, those adjustments held Navy’s last four possessions to a fumble and three drives totaling only 19 yards, sealing the Falcons’ crucial victory.

Q: Will the momentum from this low-scoring defensive battle propel the Falcons to another prestigious Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy this year?

Air Force’s win over Navy gives the Falcons a real path to the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy, but it does not make them favorites yet. The immediate significance is clear: the Falcons already hold the first leg of the three-team race and improved to 3-1, while Navy dropped to 1-3. Historically, that matters. The winner of the Navy-Air Force game has gone on to win the trophy in 41 of 54 years, and Air Force is now 35-24 all-time against Navy. It also ended the Falcons’ recent academy skid and put them in position for their first trophy since 2022. What makes this result encouraging for Air Force is how it won. Liam Szarka accounted for both touchdowns, the offense controlled the ball for more than 36 minutes, and the defense closed out the game after Navy’s 68-yard touchdown pass. Navy converted just 1 of 11 third downs and managed only 19 total yards on its final three possessions. In a service-academy race, that kind of defensive discipline travels. Still, the trophy will likely hinge on Nov. 7 at Army. Air Force must beat the Black Knights to claim it outright. If Air Force loses to Army and Army later loses to Navy, the series could end in a three-way tie, in which case Navy, as the current holder, would retain the trophy. So the Falcons have momentum and a meaningful edge, but the decisive test remains ahead.
