Summary
Yemen’s armed forces said they opened a strategic offensive on Sanaa from three fronts on Monday, escalating a Saudi-backed campaign to drive out the Iran-aligned Houthis.
Bab al-Mandab is the immediate objective: Yemen’s deputy defense minister said government forces had taken full control of the strait and Perim Island, though Houthi-aligned media denied the advances.
Saudi Arabia said it struck hundreds of targets to cover the ground push, while Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington would honor its defense and security pact with the kingdom.
The fighting centers on one of the world’s key shipping chokepoints linking the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, widening the Yemen front of the broader U.S.-Iran war.
