AFC Richmond Women Clinch Promotion and Sell Out Finale as Ted Steps Down

Q: With Ted Lasso pivoting to a women's team, is this a true fifth season or a cleverly disguised spin-off?

Right now, it looks like a fifth season in branding but a spin-off in practice. Apple TV+ has not officially renewed the show, and Brendan Hunt says there is no active writers room. But the Season 4 finale was plainly built to let the series continue under the *Ted Lasso* title while shifting its center of gravity. Hunt described the men’s team finale appearance as a “passing-of-the-torch” moment, and multiple interviews make clear that the women’s side is not a temporary detour. That matters because the finale does more than open a new subplot. It reorganizes the show around the women’s team: Alice Chilton becomes head coach, while Ted and Beard move into assistant roles. Hunt and co-creators have said Ted was never meant to bounce back to the men’s team, because that would make the women’s story feel like a side trip rather than the show’s new core. At the same time, the franchise DNA remains intact. Ted is still present, Rebecca still controls Richmond, Beard remains involved, and Roy and Keeley were written with “wiggle room” rather than formal exits. That gives Apple a way to market any return as Season 5 instead of launching a separate new series. So the most accurate answer is that it would be both: structurally, a soft reboot bordering on a spin-off; commercially and creatively, still *Ted Lasso* because the main characters, club and continuity remain in place. The label will likely depend less on story logic than on Apple’s renewal strategy.

Brendan Hunt said AFC Richmond's women's team had already secured promotion before the finale, and their biggest final-episode milestone was selling out the match.
Ted Lasso then gave up the manager's job and backed Alice Chilton to lead the side, with Ted and Coach Beard set to return next season as her assistants.
Hunt suggested that new setup could create friction, saying Ted may struggle to accept a backseat role even as he seeks more time with his son Henry.
Roy Kent's move to manage Chelsea pushed the men's team further into the background, with Hunt calling the finale appearance by male players a deliberate passing-of-the-torch moment.
No Season 5 renewal has been announced, but Hunt said the show has long planned to build out the women's squad if Apple TV+ orders another season.
