Summary
Schumer and Jeffries did not respond to requests for comment after New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani renewed his accusation that Israel is committing a “genocide” in Gaza.
Mamdani’s Wednesday statement briefly noted Hamas’ Oct. 7, 2023 attack that killed more than 1,100 Israelis and took over 250 hostages, but centered on Gaza, where he said more than 74,000 Palestinians have been killed.
Dan Goldman, a New York Democrat, called the post “reprehensible” and said Mamdani was presenting disputed allegations as fact on the anniversary of the attack.
Schumer and Jeffries instead issued separate Oct. 7 statements stressing solidarity with Israelis while also condemning Palestinian civilian suffering in Gaza and backing a two-state path or broader U.S. policy change.
