Schumer Seeks New Senate Leadership Term as 3 Democratic Candidates Withhold Support

Summary
Schumer told Politico he is running again for Senate Democratic leader, saying "Period," even as Democrats still sit in the minority after losing the chamber in 2024.
Three Democratic candidates — Adam Hamilton in Kansas, Abdul El-Sayed in Michigan and Peggy Flanagan in Minnesota — have declined to back him, with Hamilton arguing the party needs fresh leadership, term limits and age limits.
That resistance reflects a wider internal debate that intensified after Schumer allowed one shutdown fight to end early in Trump’s term and later failed to stop defections that ended the longest full government shutdown in history.
Chris Van Hollen has emerged as a potential progressive-backed alternative, though he has not said whether he would challenge Schumer and says his focus is the midterms.
The leadership question could sharpen if Democrats retake the Senate in November, but several senators, including Chris Murphy, are avoiding public commitments for now.
