New Castle Police Hunt 4 Masked Men After Door-Knocking With Apparent Rifle

Q: Were the masked men with rifles in Delaware planning a home invasion, or was it a dangerously escalating late-night prank?

There is no evidence yet that the masked men were planning a home invasion, but the behavior was serious enough that police are treating it as a criminal investigation, not harmless mischief. What is publicly known points to ambiguity. The men were masked, wore tactical-style vests, moved in a group of at least four, approached multiple homes late at night, and at least one appeared to carry a rifle. That combination would reasonably alarm residents and could fit either an attempted intimidation stunt or reconnaissance for a break-in. At the same time, police have said the weapons may have been airsoft-style guns, and the men were seen knocking and then running away rather than forcing entry. No attempted break-in, assault, or theft has been reported. That makes the “dangerously escalating prank” theory plausible, especially given the apparent door-knock-and-flee pattern. But it was an extremely risky one: realistic-looking replica guns, masks, and tactical gear at 10:50 p.m. create the conditions for panic, armed self-defense by homeowners, or a deadly police encounter. The strongest answer for now is that investigators do not have enough evidence to say home invasion was the plan. What they do have is evidence of coordinated, threatening conduct that could amount to intimidation, disorderly behavior, or more if intent is established. Until suspects are identified and interviewed, motive remains unconfirmed.

New Castle County police are investigating reports that masked men knocked on doors in the Mallard Pointe neighborhood late Friday, with one suspect seen carrying what appeared to be a rifle.
Officers were called to the 1200 block of Canvasback Drive around 10:50 p.m. after residents reported a man in a black hockey-style mask and tactical vest approaching homes before running away.
Police said four men were later seen heading east on Mallard Road — two on bicycles and two on foot — but officers and a K-9 search did not find them.
Images released by police show at least two masked individuals at front doors; authorities have not confirmed the weapons were real firearms and believe they may have been airsoft-style guns.
Police are asking residents for tips and home-security footage from the surrounding area as the search for the group continues.
