Summary
Kodiak AI plans to start hauling IKEA freight later this year with no one in the cab on a 219-mile stretch between the Dallas and Houston areas.
The company says years of testing support the move: its long-haul safety case was 96% complete at end-September, up from 93% a month earlier, with final verification and assessments still pending.
Kodiak has already run 35 driverless trucks for Atlas Energy in the Permian Basin, logging more than 40,000 hours of paid operations since launching empty-cab service there in December 2024.
On the IKEA route, the trucks will monitor more than 1,000 safety-critical components, execute fallback maneuvers to stop safely if needed, and rely on a command center for guidance rather than remote driving.
The launch will test whether autonomous trucking can move beyond limited industrial settings onto public highways, even as Kodiak says cybersecurity, emergency-vehicle response and crash accountability are built into the system.
