Summary
Microsoft introduced the Azure Maia 300 at the OCP Global Summit, saying the chip will become the primary AI inference system for its products and services in multigigawatt deployments starting next year.
40% more tokens per megawatt than leading GPU-based systems is Microsoft’s headline claim for Maia 300, while a 96-chip rack delivers seven times the rack-scale token throughput of Maia 200.
Maia 200 already runs Microsoft 365 Copilot, Teams, OpenAI models and Microsoft’s own AI workloads, giving Microsoft a base to expand in-house chips and cut dependence on Nvidia and AMD.
Hyperscalers including Amazon, Google and Meta are making similar moves because custom chips can be tailored to workloads and reduce supplier risk, though demand for Nvidia processors remains strong across mixed AI workloads.
Nvidia still gets more than half its quarterly revenue from hyperscalers, but Microsoft’s push adds to a broader threat as Amazon and Google also rent out their own chips to outside customers.
Can Microsoft's custom Maia 300 chip truly break Nvidia's AI dominance, or will TSMC supply bottlenecks stall the 2027 rollout?
With AI racks hitting 140kW, how will Microsoft cool servers packed with 96 Maia 300 chips without overloading data centers?
Will the massive cost savings from Microsoft's in-house AI silicon lower enterprise cloud bills, or just quietly inflate the tech giant's profit margins?
