Summary
U.S. District Judge Kristi Johnson imposed the maximum 90-year sentence on Sean Gardner, ordering 30 years for each of three federal child pornography production counts.
Gardner, 39, pleaded guilty to secretly placing a camera in a Purvis, Mississippi, gymnastics studio bathroom and recording girls undressing or using the toilet between December 2017 and April 2018.
Investigators later found videos on his computers showing close-up images of at least 10 minors while examining separate allegations that he sexually abused gymnasts in Iowa.
The case deepened scrutiny of gymnastics oversight: former students say USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Center for SafeSport were alerted in 2017, while SafeSport said coaches failed to report misconduct allegations as required.
Gardner was suspended in 2022 and later fired from Chow’s Gymnastics; civil lawsuits against him, USA Gymnastics and Chow’s still remain, and Iowa authorities have not yet filed charges.
