Summary
A 30 September 2026 Sentinel-3 image shows sea ice spread across West Antarctica’s edge, reaching the tip of the Antarctic Peninsula and part of the Weddell Sea.
NSIDC said Antarctica’s winter sea ice most likely peaked on 14 September, placing the satellite view near the season’s maximum extent as southern-hemisphere winter ended.
The scene covers about 1,200 km by 1,700 km, with 50-km-long Elephant Island standing out against ice-free ocean on the left side of the image.
Different ice textures are visible across the frame, from tightly packed ice on the right to large floes and smaller swirling fragments, while cloud obscures much of the lower section.
