Summary
Interior Minister Laurent Nunez said more than 1,800 people were arrested after Saturday's unrest, vowing that “the Republic will not yield” to violence.
More than 500 police officers, gendarmes and firefighters were injured, with Nunez warning the toll was still provisional as clashes in some cities ran late into the night.
Nunez said thousands of far-left protesters began attacking public buildings and confronting police by midday, then were joined by criminals who looted businesses.
Paris, Marseille, Lyon, Bordeaux, Rennes, Strasbourg, Grenoble, Nice and Limoges were among the cities hit, with authorities citing substantial damage to shops, town halls and other public buildings.
The violence erupted during nationwide protests over rising living costs and other grievances, prompting investigations to identify more suspects and an emergency meeting for President Emmanuel Macron.
