Summary
Edward Brown, 27, pleaded not guilty to raping an Irish visitor inside the Massachusetts State Police barracks on Martha's Vineyard and was released after posting $10,000 cash bail.
Prosecutors said Oak Bluffs police found the woman naked and distressed near the barracks after 1 a.m. on Aug. 15, with bruises on her legs and a red mark on her neck.
Texts and ride records tied Brown to the barracks, prosecutors said, including an Uber trip with a visibly intoxicated woman and messages asking a trooper friend, "I'm at the barracks with this chick, is that okay?"
Brown had been staying there as a guest of Trooper Ryan Costello, and Massachusetts State Police said the case prompted an internal review and a ban on overnight guests at police housing on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket.
Brown, a Boston Latin Academy security employee arrested Oct. 9, must avoid the victim and witnesses and is due back in court on Dec. 11; a conviction could bring up to 20 years in prison.
