Summary
Federal records say Willie J. Herndon, charged Friday with murdering 17-year-old Alyssa Wilson, also faces a federal felon-in-possession case and is now linked to a separate Oct. 11 shooting on Interstate 55.
Surveillance video placed Herndon’s white Buick at I-170 and Midland Boulevard on Oct. 14, where investigators say he got out, fired a high-powered rifle, and Wilson crashed seconds later.
MaxxTech 23 7.62x39 cartridge cases were recovered near Wilson’s shooting scene and at the I-55 shooting, while agents later found an ABC-15 rifle with matching ammunition on a hotel room bed after Herndon and his wife were arrested.
Ballistics testing is still pending to determine whether the two highway shootings were carried out with the same gun, potentially strengthening the link between the cases.
The federal complaint also outlines Herndon’s prior convictions in California dating to 2001, including vehicle theft, stolen property and burglary offenses.
