Summary
Nearly 15% of active Social Security numbers have been corrected across about 330 million U.S. citizens and roughly 390 million total SSA records, the agency said Wednesday.
The overhaul added 17 million dates of death to records that lacked them and updated about 25 million records missing citizenship information, with another 8.5 million citizenship-status fixes still underway.
SSA said the effort is the most comprehensive SSN record cleanup in its 91-year history and the first identity-data review of this scale.
Those records are used across federal and state agencies to verify identities, prevent improper taxpayer-funded payments and reduce fraud in benefit programs.
