Q: After recent high-tech sonar scans turned up empty, what new clues will guide the ongoing search for Amelia Earhart's missing plane?

The search will now be guided mainly by older documentary and physical clues tied to the Nikumaroro “castaway” theory, rather than the sonar target that proved false. Researchers say the empty sonar scans and the ruling-out of the so-called Taraia Object do not weaken the broader case for searching around Nikumaroro. The clues they still consider important include radio bearings from 1937 distress transmissions that reportedly converge on Nikumaroro, a 2018 reassessment of bones found on the island in 1940 that suggested they may have belonged to a woman of Earhart’s build, and 1930s-era artifacts recovered there, including a woman’s shoe, cosmetic items and a medicine vial. Investigators are also looking again at visual evidence. That includes the “Bevington Object,” a photographic anomaly seen on the reef in images taken a few months after Earhart disappeared, as well as newly released high-resolution 1938 aerial photographs from a New Zealand survey that may offer fresh detail for researchers to examine. The recent expedition also recovered smaller items, including a steel tube, that may help researchers understand how debris could drift through Nikumaroro’s lagoon and collect along the Taraia Peninsula. In short, the next phase of the search is expected to rely on reanalyzing historical photos, radio data, bone analysis, and island artifacts to decide where to look next.

Q: What surprising evidence led to federal racketeering and money laundering charges against a prominent state lawmaker's cannabis business?

Federal prosecutors say the key evidence was a court-approved wiretap and intercepted phone calls, backed by searches of the cannabis shops that allegedly turned up marijuana and firearms. According to the indictment and reporting cited in the quiz background, investigators captured conversations in which Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas allegedly discussed the business in blunt financial terms, including saying it was a “last chance at generational wealth” and, in one call, “I’ve gotten too old to not be greedy.” Prosecutors argue those calls helped show intent and linked the lawmaker directly to the alleged enterprise. Authorities also say the investigation uncovered the use of multiple business entities to disguise proceeds from illegal marijuana sales, which formed part of the money-laundering allegations. Search warrants executed at The Cannabis Outlet and The CBD Shoppe reportedly produced additional physical evidence, including marijuana and guns, which prosecutors say reinforced the broader racketeering case. Lucas has denied wrongdoing, and the charges remain allegations until tested in court.
