Summary
Four major U.S. medical organizations on Monday issued a coordinated “Female Life Stages” framework that tells clinicians to assess cardiovascular risk in girls and women from puberty through menopause.
More than 400,000 U.S. women die each year from cardiovascular disease, yet only 41% recognize it as their top health threat; the groups said that gap and rising projected risk drove the new guidance.
The framework ties risk assessment to four stages—perimenarche, ovarian cycle and pregnancy, perimenopause, and postmenopause—flagging menstrual irregularities, pregnancy complications and menopause-related changes as early warning signs.
Pregnancy is treated as a cardiovascular “stress test,” while preeclampsia, gestational diabetes, perinatal depression and anxiety, and early menopause are highlighted as markers for higher later-life heart risk.
The guidance aims to counter fragmented care across pediatrics, obstetrics and cardiology as women’s cardiovascular disease prevalence is projected to rise from 10.7% in 2020 to 14.4% by 2050.
