Trump called for Rep. Ilhan Omar to resign immediately, arguing questions about her legal status and name could disqualify her from serving in Congress.
A federal filing in the Justice Department probe lists her as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar,” while House records show “Ilhan Omar” on 15 financial disclosures since 2018.
Federal agents recently raided Omar’s Washington home and removed 17 items, including phones, notebooks, a camera and a Somali phrase book, according to the report.
House Republicans have limited options: expulsion would require a two-thirds vote, and the House has expelled only 6 members in its history, most recently George Santos in 2023.
Even if Republicans challenge Omar when the new Congress convenes in January, Supreme Court precedent in Powell v. McCormack makes it difficult to block a member who meets the Constitution’s basic qualifications.
