Summary
DC.com’s Joshua Lapin-Bertone says "Clayface" is loaded with hidden references, from Imperial Pictures and Coast City to Ferris Air, Jitters Coffee and Big Belly Burger.
Many of the film’s biggest nods trace back to "Batman: The Animated Series" two-parter "Feat of Clay," including Matt Hagen’s actor backstory, his disfigurement-driven transformation and the monster’s final design.
Gotham-specific callbacks run deep through locations and props: the Narrows, Gotham General Hospital, Amusement Mile, Sionis Industries, the Gotham Gazette and Vesuvius nightclub all tie the movie tightly to Batman lore.
Deeper cuts include the GCPD’s 298th Precinct—matching Matt Hagen’s 1961 debut in Detective Comics #298—and a wanted poster for Jimmy McCoy, a mobster who appeared only once in 1941’s Batman #4.
"Clayface," directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, is now in theaters, with the roundup framing the film as both a revenge body-horror story and a showcase for DC world-building.
