Justin Boone Names Dak Prescott, Rachaad White Week 8 Starts as Patrick Mahomes Headlines Sits

Q: Will Jared Goff's flawless touchdown streak survive the Vikings' elite blitz, or is he a fantasy trap waiting to happen this week?

Jared Goff is not a fantasy trap this week, but the Vikings’ blitz-heavy defense makes him more of a lower-end QB1 than a slam-dunk top-five play. The case for trusting him is strong. He has been one of the league’s safest fantasy quarterbacks, with 14 touchdown passes and no interceptions, and Detroit’s offense has been among the NFL’s most productive. Just as important for this matchup, Goff has handled pressure unusually well: against the blitz, he owns a 123.3 passer rating, has completed about 70% of his throws, and has six touchdowns with no interceptions. That directly matters against a Minnesota defense that blitzes at a historic rate of roughly 70%. The warning signs are real, though. Minnesota leads the league or sits near the top in virtually every key pass-defense metric, including scoring defense, pressure rate, completion percentage allowed and fantasy points allowed to quarterbacks. Several fantasy analysts have downgraded Goff this week because the Vikings are the toughest quarterback matchup he has seen, and his lack of rushing production lowers his margin for error if the passing efficiency dips. So the most likely answer is that the touchdown streak has a good chance to survive, because Detroit’s offense is too well-structured and Goff has been too efficient against pressure to call him a trap. But expecting his usual ceiling is risky. He remains startable in most leagues, just with more volatility than usual against Brian Flores’ defense.

Q: With star players unexpectedly ruled out for Week 8, which under-the-radar backup is poised to become a fantasy football league-winner?

Braelon Allen looks like the clearest under-the-radar backup who could swing Week 8 leagues. The key driver is Breece Hall’s absence. Both the story and the added reporting point to Allen as the direct beneficiary, with his role jumping from stash to must-start if Hall is out. The internet reporting is especially strong on this point, describing Allen as a locked-in starter and a solid RB2-level play against a Raiders defense that has been generous to running backs. What makes Allen more than just a fill-in is workload and recent production. The added context notes multiple 100-yard games and dependable touch volume, which is exactly what fantasy managers want from an emergency replacement. In a week where injury news is reshaping backfields across the league, Allen appears to have the cleanest path to immediate carries, goal-line chances and usable fantasy floor. Other backups mentioned, including Jordan Mason, Emanuel Wilson, Elijah Mitchell and Bam Knight, are worth monitoring, but their value is more conditional because it depends on additional injury developments or less certain workload splits. Allen stands out because his opportunity is tied directly to a star back being ruled out and because analysts are already treating him as a plug-and-play option rather than a speculative add. If Week 8 produces a surprise fantasy hero, Allen is the best bet to be that league-winning backup.

Dak Prescott, Rachaad White, Michael Wilson and Hunter Henry led Boone’s Week 8 start recommendations, with Prescott facing a Cardinals defense that has allowed at least two touchdown passes to six straight quarterbacks.
Mahomes topped Boone’s sit list after four straight weeks outside QB1 range, with Boone citing reduced rushing, injuries around Kansas City’s offense and a tougher Broncos matchup with Pat Surtain II expected back.
White’s role drove one of the strongest endorsements: he handled nearly 70% of Washington’s snaps before the bye and now faces an Eagles defense that has yielded several big running back lines over the last month.
Boone also flagged matchup-based upside for Kyler Murray, DJ Moore and T.J. Hockenson, while warning against Omarion Hampton, Rome Odunze and Pat Freiermuth because of committees, limited roles or difficult defenses.
The start-sit column follows Boone’s broader Week 8 rankings release and is aimed at helping fantasy managers make final lineup calls before kickoff.
