Michael Douglas Says 89-Year-Old Jack Nicholson Has Disappeared From Hollywood

Q: What kept Hollywood legends Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson from ever sharing the screen despite their decades-long friendship?

Nothing specific “kept” Michael Douglas and Jack Nicholson apart; by Douglas’s own account, the opportunity simply never arose. Douglas said while promoting his memoir *One Helluva Ride* that he “would have liked to have acted with Jack” but “never got the chance.” Their careers overlapped for decades and they were professionally linked through *One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest* in 1975, which Douglas produced and Nicholson starred in, but they were not cast as actors in the same project. That makes it more a case of timing and project choices than any feud or deliberate decision. Douglas’s remarks suggest it was one of those notable Hollywood near-misses: two major stars, longtime friends, but no script or production ever put them on screen together. Any remaining possibility appears to have ended with Nicholson’s withdrawal from acting. Douglas said Nicholson is “not working any more,” is “well,” and has largely stepped out of public life. Nicholson has not appeared in a film since 2010’s *How Do You Know*, and while he has made a few rare public appearances, he is widely regarded as living in unofficial retirement. So the answer is straightforward: despite a long friendship and even a significant collaboration behind the scenes, Douglas and Nicholson never shared the screen because no acting project brought them together before Nicholson left the business.

Douglas, 82, said Jack Nicholson, 89, has effectively vanished from Hollywood, describing his longtime friend as no longer working but healthy and living quietly at home.
Nicholson was last credited in the 2010 film “How Do You Know,” underscoring how long he has been absent from acting and the public spotlight.
Douglas made the remarks while promoting his memoir “One Helluva Ride,” saying one missed opportunity in his career was never getting to act alongside Nicholson.
The comments add to Nicholson’s long-running low profile, even as recent accounts from Crystal Hefner and daughter Lorraine Nicholson revived stories about his past presence around the Playboy Mansion.
