Summary
Rain and thunderstorms are forecast on Election Day across competitive states including Texas, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi and Florida, while most of the East and West Coasts are expected to stay clear.
National Weather Service meteorologist Jennifer Tate said the day should be "pretty tranquil" overall, but a storm band from Iowa to Texas could bring excessive rain, minor flash flooding and, in Mississippi, possible tornadoes and strong winds.
Florida is expected to get lighter rain after days of heavy downpours, Texas and Kansas should clear later in the day, and lighter showers could linger across Iowa, Wisconsin and Minnesota.
With millions of ballots already cast, experts say weather is unlikely to decide the elections, though research shows it can still slightly depress turnout.
