Google Disables K-12 AI by Default in 2027 as Search Access Hinges on AI Acceptance

Summary
Next year, Google will switch off Gemini, NotebookLM, Gemini in Classroom and related AI tools for K-12 students unless school administrators actively enable them.
Google said the policy follows consultations with educators, researchers and policymakers, while also rolling out Guided Learning—an AI tutor-style tool meant to promote understanding rather than answer-spitting.
Schools that block AI entirely will also lose Google Search, because AI features are now built into search; students would instead see a school notice saying search is unavailable.
That leaves schools in a bind: teachers may want to limit AI Overviews for assignments but still need search for sources, and Google's classroom dominance through apps and Chromebooks gives districts little room to avoid the trade-off.
Google said it will provide more details in coming months before the rollout, framing the change as giving school leaders more control over how AI is used in classrooms.
