Summary
Four Black governors won election Tuesday, ensuring that multiple elected Black governors will serve at the same time in U.S. history for the first time.
Wes Moore won re-election in Maryland, while Byron Donalds in Florida, Keisha Lance Bottoms in Georgia and David Crowley in Wisconsin all captured open or contested governor's races.
That total could still rise to five if Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford defeats incumbent Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo.
Before these victories, only three elected Black governors had ever served in U.S. history—Virginia's Doug Wilder, Massachusetts' Deval Patrick and Maryland's Moore—and none overlapped in office.
