Summary
$250,000 was the price Joran van der Sloot demanded in newly released FBI footage to reveal where Natalee Holloway's body was, according to Netflix's docuseries Taken: Natalee Holloway.
The 2010 video shows van der Sloot meeting Beth Holloway's lawyer in an Aruba hotel room, accepting a $10,000 cash payment and discussing another $15,000 upfront before the remaining $225,000.
His claim then collapsed: he led investigators to a nearby house and said Holloway's remains were in its foundation, but the FBI found no construction had occurred there when she disappeared in 2005.
That false lead underpinned U.S. wire fraud and extortion charges; van der Sloot pleaded guilty in 2023 and also confessed to killing Holloway 18 years earlier.
Van der Sloot is now serving a 28-year Peru sentence for killing Stephany Flores Ramírez and a concurrent 20-year U.S. extortion sentence, with release expected in 2045.
