Google Messages Rolls Out Pinned Chats Redesign, Adds Floating Search Button

Q: Why is Google Messages drastically cutting its pinned chat limit from twenty to just six in the new redesign?

Google appears to be cutting the pinned-chat limit because the new design turns pins into a much larger, more visual “favorites” area, and 20 pinned chats would take up too much space. In the beta redesign, pinned conversations are no longer small entries at the top of the regular inbox. They are shown as oversized contact icons in a dedicated section above the conversation list, reportedly arranged in two rows of three. That layout gives each pinned chat far more prominence, but it also consumes much more room on the home screen and pushes the rest of the inbox downward. Reporting from Android Authority, Droid Life and NerdsChalk all points to this same direction. The hidden beta picker also explicitly enforces the cap. It says “Pin up to 6 chats. Drag to reorder,” and shows a “Limit reached” warning when a seventh chat is selected. That suggests the six-chat ceiling is intentional design behavior, not an accident. The broader idea seems to be a shift from “pin many threads” to “surface a few favorite people.” The new pinned area reportedly drops message snippets and last-activity details, making it more like a quick-access contact strip, similar to iMessage’s pinned contacts. In that kind of interface, a smaller number is more manageable and visually cleaner. That said, Google has not publicly explained the change, and the feature is still hidden in beta. So the practical reason is clear from the design, but whether six will remain the final limit is still not confirmed.

Google has begun a gradual server-side rollout of a new Messages interface that moves pinned chats into a separate top section with large circular contact photos and names.
The redesign gives the app a more iMessage-like look and makes favorite conversations easier to spot, but it removes the quick preview of the latest message from pinned threads.
Google is also testing a floating search button that appears beside the Start chat button while users scroll, so they can search older messages without returning to the top.
Reddit users have reported seeing the changes, though many on the latest app version still only have the refreshed gradient icon, indicating the update is not yet widely enabled.
