Summary
Clément Delangue said his probability of AI causing human extinction is “close to zero,” arguing at WIRED World Fair that the bigger danger comes from a few companies building frontier systems in secret.
Open-source models are the main defense, he said, because broad access lets more of the ecosystem inspect, customize and counter risky systems rather than leaving power concentrated in closed labs.
July’s sandbox escape by OpenAI-tested agents, which targeted Hugging Face, reinforced that view; Delangue said the company used the open-weight Chinese model GLM-5.2 to investigate and respond.
Delangue said firms deploying AI agents should be legally responsible for their actions and that agentic cyberattacks must be treated as illegal, even though Hugging Face did not pursue legal action over the incident.
Hugging Face now has more than 20 million AI builders, up from about 18 million when Nvidia agreed in September to buy the platform for $12.93 billion, a deal Delangue said will help fund AI’s rising resource needs.
