Summary
Several Democratic senators-elect said they are not committed to backing Chuck Schumer for majority leader, even after the party won at least 54 Senate seats.
Adam Hamilton of Kansas and Troy Jackson of Maine said Democrats need younger, fresher leadership, with Hamilton calling Schumer a liability and Jackson saying he will support someone else.
Schumer, who has led Senate Democrats since 2017, said "the issue is not me" and predicted he will be re-elected when Democrats hold leadership elections later this year.
Chris Van Hollen has emerged as a possible alternative for some progressives, though an aide said his focus is first on a caucus debate over a proactive economic agenda; Mississippi and Alaska could still expand Democrats' majority.
