Garmin Vivoactive 5 Falls to Record $170 on Amazon With 43% Discount

Q: Can this heavily discounted smartwatch maintain accurate tracking in dense cities without the multi-band GPS found in premium models?

Not fully. The Garmin Vivoactive 5 can deliver solid GPS tracking for everyday runs and rides, but in dense city streets it is more likely to drift than premium Garmin models with multi-band GPS. The watch uses single-band, multi-constellation GNSS, drawing on systems such as GPS, GLONASS and Galileo. In open areas, that is generally accurate enough for casual fitness users, and independent testing cited in the broader coverage suggests its GPS performance is reliable for steady road workouts and daily use. The weakness appears in “urban canyon” conditions, where tall buildings reflect and block satellite signals. That is exactly where multi-band GPS helps premium watches keep a tighter route line and more accurate pace and distance. Side-by-side comparisons in the related coverage indicate newer models such as the Vivoactive 6 hold position better in downtown areas and forested trails because they add multi-band reception. So the discounted Vivoactive 5 remains a strong value if your priority is general fitness, long battery life and Garmin’s health features at a low price. But if you regularly train in dense city centers and want the most dependable route and pace accuracy, this model’s lack of multi-band GPS is a real limitation, not just a spec-sheet detail. For most buyers at around $170, the tradeoff is acceptable. For city runners who care deeply about precise GPS tracks, a higher-end Garmin is still the better fit.
