Summary
U.S. Central Command said Saturday it created Task Force Iron Gate to disrupt Iran’s overland movement of weapons, dual-use technology, sanctioned materials and illicit revenue across land borders and the Caspian Sea.
The roughly 20-person unit is based in Tampa and will work with other U.S. agencies to target routes not covered by the maritime campaign already underway.
Those new targets expand a July naval blockade of Iranian ports on the Persian Gulf and Gulf of Oman that CENTCOM says has already blocked more than $25 billion in crude exports.
Adm. Brad Cooper said the effort is meant to further limit Iran’s ability to finance terrorism, rebuild weapons factories and replenish its military.
