Notre Dame Lands Week 10 A With 31-24 Miami Win as Ohio State Takes F in 41-28 Loss

Q: How will Miami's controversial late-game incomplete pass impact the College Football Playoff committee's final rankings?

It is unlikely to have a major direct impact on the committee’s final rankings unless Miami finishes on the playoff bubble against a team with a nearly identical résumé. The committee evaluates the full body of work, not a single disputed call. In practical terms, Notre Dame’s 31-24 win will count as a top-tier victory over the then-No. 1 team, while Miami will be judged on the fact that it lost, how competitive the game was, and the context around it. The late incompletion does help Miami’s argument that the loss was narrow and potentially could have gone another way, but the committee historically does not re-officiate games. What is more likely is that the play affects perception at the margins. Miami should drop from No. 1, but probably not collapse, because it rallied from 24-3 down, lost on the road to a top-11 opponent, and was missing star receiver Malachi Toney. If the Hurricanes win out and reach the ACC championship game, this loss would still look survivable. Notre Dame, meanwhile, gains the marquee win it badly needed and should move up meaningfully. So the call may become part of the discussion if Miami and another contender are being separated for one of the last at-large spots or seeding lines. But the bigger ranking drivers will be Miami’s first-half struggles, Notre Dame’s signature win, and what both teams do over the final weeks.
