That means the most likely terrifying development between the two police responses is that a violent episode occurred inside the home before or during the fire, and that the fire may have been set afterward or ignited later. Investigators have not publicly said whether the gunshots caused the deaths, whether all eight victims were shot, or whether the fire was deliberately used to destroy evidence. Officials are treating the case as suspicious, and Michigan State Police arson investigators are assisting. Autopsies are expected to determine the exact causes and timing of death. Authorities have also said there is no threat to the public, suggesting they may already have reason to believe this was a contained incident rather than a broader ongoing danger.
