Less than a week after Corey Ruiz was killed in an officer-involved shooting, Madison Independent Police Monitor Aeiramique Glass formally opened an investigation but said police still have not provided the officer’s name.
Glass said that missing confirmation is blocking basic steps in the independent review, even though the monitor’s office and the Police and Community Oversight Board were created to investigate police conduct and ensure accountability.
At a Monday press conference, community leaders and oversight officials urged the city to boost funding for both bodies, with most backing a reallocation of 1% of the Madison Police Department budget.
Freedom Inc. pushed for a larger commitment of 5%, arguing the oversight system needs stable funding as pressure grows for transparency after the July 22 shooting.
