Apple’s hidden iOS 27 restricted mode appears to be a general finance-enforcement system for managed or financed devices, not something Apple says it will use for its new Apple Upgrade leases. The code found in the iOS 27 beta describes an “App Managed Features” framework that lets an authorized financing or provider app enroll a device, check whether the contract is in good standing, and, if not, push the device into a limited state. In that mode, most apps could be blocked while only core functions remain available, including Phone, Settings, Wallet, Clock, App Store, Health, Magnifier, Passwords, and accessibility tools. Some critical-alert apps such as Messages or Home could also remain accessible. The same framework also includes a “Partner Finance Lock,” a new activation-lock style control intended to stop a restricted device from being erased, resold, or stripped for parts. Reporting indicates this lock is tied into Find My for persistence, though not to share location with lenders. That means the likely purpose of the feature is broader than Apple Upgrade itself: to give financing partners or other approved providers a technical way to control financed hardware when contracts fall out of compliance. Apple has explicitly said missed payments in the Klarna-backed Upgrade program will not trigger restricted mode or any loss of functionality, so the code may be for another financing product, another market, or a capability Apple built but is not using here.

Apple said devices in its new Upgrade leasing program will keep full functionality even if customers miss payments or default, rejecting reports that iPhones could be locked into a limited-use mode.
The clarification followed 9to5Mac's discovery of iOS 27 beta code for an “App Managed Features” system that could let financial partners run status checks and place devices into “Restricted Mode.”
That mode would have blocked access to most apps, leaving only basics such as Phone, App Store, Clock, Settings and Wallet available.
Klarna, Apple's partner for the no-interest monthly leasing plan covering iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Watch, said three consecutive missed payments would terminate the lease and make the full outstanding balance due.
