Rachel Accurso, known as Ms. Rachel, drew backlash after posting that the Nolan Wells investigation "would have been different" if the 18-year-old were white and his friends Black.
Dave Aronberg, a former Florida state attorney, said the claim lacked evidence and risked harming both the ongoing investigation and public trust, even as he called for more transparency for Wells' family.
Wells disappeared during a July 4 boat trip to Mississippi's Horn Island and was found dead two days later; an independent autopsy commissioned by his family listed the manner of death as undetermined.
Ben Crump disclosed that autopsy at the NAACP convention last week, saying findings did not rule out non-accidental causes, while results from a second state-ordered autopsy and any charges are still pending.
The dispute has widened online speculation in a case already shadowed by questions over race, with Accurso's post amplifying claims that authorities treated Wells' death differently because he was Black.
