China Reaches Top Tier in Space Computing as Satellite AI Push Targets Global Access

China has reached the first tier of global space-based computing development, according to computing scientist Liu Yaoqi, citing progress in engineering verification, industrial-chain completeness and application exploration.
Space-based computing shifts satellites from a 'space sensing, ground computing' model to in-orbit processing, letting them filter, analyze and respond to data directly instead of sending large raw datasets back to Earth.
Liu said China already has a relatively complete foundation spanning satellite manufacturing, rocket launches, satellite internet, computing platforms and AI applications, though the industry is still early and large-scale low-cost commercialization remains unresolved.
Key hurdles include reliable operation in space, thermal management, high-speed inter-satellite links, collaborative multi-satellite computing, launch costs and business models.
Under Zhongke Tiansuan's Tiansuan Plan, the sector is expected to advance from single-satellite tests to constellation-level collaborative computing and eventually large-scale space infrastructure for AI and digital services.
