Q: Will the illusion of control in this new beta update actually improve your texting experience or just reorganize the clutter?

It will probably improve the texting experience a little, but it will not solve the underlying clutter. The beta update gives Google Messages users a practical quality-of-life change: they can drag the attachment shortcuts into an order that matches their habits. For people who repeatedly use Gallery, Camera, Schedule Send, or location sharing, moving those tools to the top row should reduce taps and make the menu feel faster and more personal. Reports also indicate the attachment sheet can expand to a full-screen view, which may make the grid easier to scan and manage. But the feature is limited. The grid still adapts to screen size, still shows up to 11 actions, and still does not appear to let users hide or remove shortcuts they never use. That means the update is more about prioritizing than simplifying. Unused tools can be pushed lower, but they remain part of the interface. So the “control” is real, but partial. It is not just cosmetic, because reordering frequently used actions can improve speed and muscle memory. At the same time, it may feel like an illusion of deep customization for users who want a cleaner, stripped-down attachment menu. Until Google adds the option to disable or hide shortcuts, this update is best seen as better organization rather than a true fix for clutter.

Google Messages v20260731 beta adds a caret at the top of the attachment sheet that expands the shortcut grid into a full-screen view.
