Trump Administration Cuts $1 Million Sex-Education Grant, Drawing Lawsuits

$1 million in annual funding for King County’s public-health program was cut as the Trump administration terminated multiple sex-education grants, prompting a lawsuit from Planned Parenthood of the Heartland, SIECUS and two county governments.
HHS said the programs were not aligned with agency priorities, while plaintiffs argue the overhaul defies Congress by pushing abstinence-only, non-evidence-based curricula and medically inaccurate information about contraception.
Defunded grantees said the cuts were abrupt because they had already revised lessons to comply with 2025 bans on funding for “gender ideology” and DEI, and had been approved for additional money afterward.
Healthy Futures of Texas said HHS took lesson excerpts out of context; the group says the program has reached more than 58,000 young people in three years across San Antonio, Dallas and the Rio Grande Valley.
The dispute widens the administration’s broader remaking of federally funded sex education, including scrutiny of programs that used “Love Notes,” even when they relied on an abstinence-only version.
