Mamdani Sidesteps Questions on $3 Billion Tax-Hike Push for Wealthy New Yorkers

Fox 5 New York pressed Zohran Mamdani on reports he will launch a post-Labor Day campaign for higher taxes on wealthy residents and corporations, but he repeatedly refused to confirm any plan before November.
The reported push would revive his earlier bid to raise the city income-tax rate on filers earning $1 million or more and lift corporate taxes to help close a multibillion-dollar budget gap.
Kathy Hochul had already rejected similar proposals in early 2026, leaving the mayor to point instead to joint wins including 2,000 free child-care seats now and an expansion to 12,000.
That Albany partnership also produced New York's first pied-a-terre tax in May, expected to raise about $500 million annually after Mamdani's broader tax plan had projected roughly $3 billion a year.
