Summary
A Wednesday filing asked prosecutors to complete a fresh evidence search within 30 days as Alex Murdaugh heads toward a retrial in the 2021 killings of his wife Maggie and son Paul.
The defense wants any material that could aid Murdaugh or weaken the state’s case, including new DNA or forensic results, additional search warrants, and records that could impeach prosecution witnesses.
Those records include misconduct findings, disciplinary history, inconsistent statements, plea deals, rewards, or promises of favorable treatment, plus information tied to the "Side of Road" and narcotics SLED investigations.
The push comes after the South Carolina Supreme Court overturned Murdaugh’s March 2023 murder and weapons convictions over jury tampering allegations involving former court clerk Rebecca Hill and sent the case back for new proceedings.
Murdaugh is due back in court on Aug. 14, with prosecutors still maintaining he received a fair trial despite the reversal.
