Lea Thompson, Tracy Spiridakos Discuss 'Anna Pigeon' at Decider Studio as USA Network Series Debuts

Q: Why did the creators abandon the original Texas setting for Glacier National Park in this gritty new mystery?

They moved the pilot from Texas to Glacier National Park to better serve the series’ visual and dramatic goals while keeping the core of Nevada Barr’s story intact. Lea Thompson said the adaptation uses material from Barr’s *Track of the Cat* and *The Rope*, but the creative team shifted the original Texas setting of the first book to Glacier because the show was being built as a scenic, wilderness-driven mystery. Glacier gave them the kind of vast, rugged environment they wanted as both backdrop and story engine for Anna’s grief, isolation and investigations. The park setting also fit the show’s broader concept better. Unlike a one-off adaptation, the TV version is designed as an ongoing, character-driven procedural centered on crimes in national parks. Glacier offered a strong home base for that approach, with mountains, wildlife and dangerous terrain reinforcing the series’ “gritty” and immersive feel. Production realities also supported the change. Thompson and Tracy Spiridakos emphasized that the show needed to be shot practically, on location, not on a soundstage, so the wilderness would feel “real and visceral.” Filming in the Canadian Rockies, which doubled for Glacier, gave the series the scale and authenticity the producers wanted. So the Texas setting was dropped not because the source story was discarded, but because Glacier National Park better matched the show’s tone, long-term structure and commitment to authentic outdoor storytelling.
