Hundreds gathered at Kyiv's Volodymyrska Cathedral on Saturday for the farewell to Oleksiy Yukov, whose open coffin was carried in by teammates as rain fell.
The 40-year-old volunteer was killed after stepping on a mine during a recovery mission, his family said, ending years of work retrieving bodies from some of Ukraine's most dangerous front-line areas.
Yukov's group, Platsdarm, had recovered thousands of bodies during the war, including Russian soldiers later exchanged for Ukrainian remains, while widows and relatives credited him with bringing loved ones home for burial.
A veteran of body-recovery work since his teens, Yukov said the unburied dead kept the "energy of war" alive in eastern Ukraine and once predicted he might not live long enough to finish that mission.
