Summary
Amtrak halted Seattle-Portland rail service indefinitely after last week's fire near Portland's Union Station left the route damaged, extending what had earlier been expected to be a disruption of at least several days.
Almost all northbound traffic remains restricted, with lines 500 and 511 fully canceled, several other trains replaced by buses, and Portland passengers on some Seattle-Vancouver, Wash., services told to arrange their own transfer.
Trains between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., and between Portland and Eugene are still running, while customers on affected services can rebook without extra charge or cancel for a full refund.
The Aug. 2 blaze left the 100-year-old Centennial Mills warehouse extremely unstable and at risk of collapse; Portland gave the owners until Aug. 14 to begin demolition, and the cause is still under investigation.
The disruption could widen beyond transit repairs after Portland said Friday that human remains were likely present in the burned warehouse.
