Samsung Launches Stable One UI 9 on Galaxy Z Fold 8 and Flip 8 as Android 17 Rollout Nears

Q: Why did Samsung suddenly abandon the Galaxy S22 series in its massive One UI 9 update?

Samsung did not suddenly abandon the Galaxy S22 series; the phones have simply reached the end of their promised major Android upgrade cycle. When Samsung launched the Galaxy S22 line in 2022, it committed to four generations of Android OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The S22 shipped with Android 12 and has since received Android 13, 14, 15 and 16. That means Android 16-based One UI 8 was its fourth and final guaranteed OS upgrade. One UI 9 is based on Android 17, so the S22 is no longer eligible. That is why the oldest flagship devices widely expected to get One UI 9 begin with the Galaxy S23 series, not the S22 family. Reporting around Samsung roadmaps and eligibility lists shows the same cutoff also affecting other 2022 flagships such as the Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4. The pattern is tied to Android 17 eligibility, not a last-minute change aimed specifically at the S22. S22 owners are still set to receive security updates for about another year, so Samsung is not ending support altogether. What is ending is feature development: no new One UI refinements, Android 17 features, or newer Galaxy AI additions. The frustration comes from comparison with newer Samsung devices, which now get longer support terms, in some cases up to seven years. But for the Galaxy S22, Samsung appears to be following the original support policy it promised at launch, not breaking it.
