Lufthansa Launches Free Starlink Wi-Fi on 850 Aircraft by 2029

Because Lufthansa is solving for cabin comfort and safety, not just bandwidth. Starlink can technically support office-like internet speeds, but the airline is still banning live voice and video calls because those activities create the most disruption in a tightly packed cabin. Lufthansa said the rule is meant to reduce disturbance, which aligns with wider airline practice. A passenger streaming a film or working in the cloud can do so silently with headphones. A phone or video call usually requires speaking out loud, often for long stretches, and nearby passengers hear only one side of the conversation at close range. That is why many airlines and former flight attendants treat calls as a special problem even when fast Wi‑Fi is available. There is also an operational reason. Crew and aviation advocates have argued that loud calls can make it harder for passengers to hear announcements and can trigger disputes that distract cabin crew. Several U.S. carriers already prohibit in-flight calls, and lawmakers have continued pushing for a broader ban on the grounds of safety as well as “passenger sanity.” So the contradiction is only apparent: Lufthansa is offering high-speed internet for quiet, high-bandwidth uses such as streaming, browsing and work, while blocking the uses most likely to disturb other travelers or create enforcement problems. In other words, the network may be fast enough for video calls, but the cabin environment is not.

August 19 marks the debut of Lufthansa Group’s new Starlink-powered service, with an Airbus A320neo operating the first equipped flight and free access offered to passengers with a Miles & More account or Travel ID.
Low-Earth-orbit satellites are meant to deliver home-like speeds for video streaming and cloud-based work, as Lufthansa pushes connectivity alongside seats and onboard service as a core part of the travel experience.
About 850 aircraft across Lufthansa, Swiss, Austrian, Brussels Airlines, ITA Airways and other group carriers are due to get the service by 2029, which Lufthansa says would make it Europe’s largest airline group deployment of Starlink.
Headphones will be required for audio and video, while voice calls, video calls and live streaming from the aircraft will be banned to limit disruption.
Mastercard is sponsoring the rollout, and Lufthansa joins a fast-growing market where 46 airlines worldwide already offer Starlink Wi-Fi.
