Pål Brekke said timing also works against viewers: totality hits in the afternoon, when observers sit under the daytime auroral oval, which expands far less than the nighttime oval during storms.
Spain’s odds are even lower, with Brekke saying auroras there would need about KP=9 conditions around 20:00 UTC and still would probably miss the strongest part of the oval.
If coronal mass ejections arrive just before the eclipse, Iceland or Greenland watchers could still get a rare triple spectacle alongside the Perseid meteor shower peak.
